How to safeguard structural integrity of Continuous Caster Ladle Turrets?

      · steel,continuous caster,turret,slewing bearing,Monitoring

The turret of the continuous caster is meant to rotate on and on … and on. Bringing ladle after ladle to the casting position above the tundish. As the ladles are filled with liquid steel, the mechanical solicitation varies in magnitude as well as direction because of the rotation and constant cycling between full and empty. The conditions thus are challenging. As a result, even under normal operating conditions, the foundation and slewing bearing are subjected to significant and alternating loads. It is thus not a surprise that sometimes one of the components fails. Such a damage naturally implies a big repair operation and results in reduced production. How can it be avoided?

In an ideal world extensive damage, or even failure of the bearing or foundation can be avoided. This can be realized by implementing a dedicated monitoring solution consisting of a combination of dedicated sensors with a permanent readout and the associated analysis software.
